Super Eagles head coach Jose Peseiro, against all odds, decided to star Stanley Nwabili in goal ahead of his preferred choice, Francis Uzoho.
Heading to the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations in Ivory Coast, the tactician included goalkeepers Uzoho, Stanley Nwabili and Ojo Olorunleke in his 25-man squad.
But it was Nwabili who made the starting lineup in Nigeria's opening match of the tournament against Equatorial Guinea.
The 27-year-old star was born in Lagos, Nigeria. He plies his trade in South Africa, featuring for Chippa United.
As Uzoho continued to face heavy criticism from fans and the media, Jose Peseiro went in search of the shot-stopper, who was also impressive during his time at Enyimba.
NPFL Updates reports that Nwabili could be Nigeria's future if he continues to impress.
His experience in the Nigeria Professional Football League could also play a huge role for him, having also been featured for Lobi Stars and Katsina United.
According to Transfer Markt Nwabili is valued at €250,000.
How did Nwabili perform against Equatorial Guinea
Although he had a decent game, he failed to keep a clean sheet after Ivan Salvador's effort from the area hit the back of the net in the 36th minute.
Nigeria responded two minutes later, courtesy of a Victor Osimhen header.
Nwabili was practically on 'holiday' in most parts of the second half as the Djurtus failed to threaten the goalmouth area.
