Countries with most goals in single AFCON

1. Ivory Coast (16 goals, 2008)

Ivory Coast broke the record for most goals in a single AFCON tournament, finding the back of the net 16 times during the 2008 campaign.

They started the tournament like a house on fire, sweeping Group B. Ivory Coast scored a total of eight goals in their victories over Nigeria, Mali, and Benin as they finished top of the group.

They carried that excellent form into the quarter-finals, with Ivory Coast crushing Guinea 5-0 in their last-eight showdown.

Their championship hopes ended, however, in the semis as Egypt handed them a heavy 4-1 defeat, per The Guardian.

They failed to take home a medal, with Ivory Coast also losing the third-place match against Ghana 4-2.

Didier Drogba scored three goals in that tournament.

2. Egypt (15 goals, 2008)

Egypt came close to matching Ivory Coast’s goal tally in 2008. They found the back of the net 15 times during their championship run.

They finished top of Group C with seven points, scoring eight goals in their matches against Cameroon, Zambia, and Sudan.

They then recorded a 2-1 win over Angola in the quarter-finals, a 4-1 victory over Ivory Coast in the semi-finals, and a narrow 1-0 victory over Cameroon in the final to successfully defend their title.

2. Egypt (15 goals, 2010)

Egypt made history in 2010 when they captured the AFCON title for the third straight time. They did so in style as well, scoring 15 goals in their championship run, just like in 2008.

They crushed the opposition in Group C, winning all of their three matches. Egypt scored seven goals in their wins over Nigeria, Benin, and Mozambique.

They continued their fine play in the quarters, beating Cameroon 3-1 after extra time.

Egypt then eased past Algeria 4-0 in the semis before beating Ghana 1-0 in the final, per the BBC.

2. Zambia (15 goals, 1996)

Zambia advanced to the knockout round in style, finishing top of Group B after scoring nine goals in their wins over Burkina Faso (5-1) and Sierra Leone (4-0).

They then shocked Egypt in the quarters, erasing a 1-0 deficit in the second half. Litana, Mutale, and Lota scored the goals for Zambia in their 3-1 win.

Their bid to win the championship was thwarted, however, by Tunisia, losing 4-2 in the semis.

They were able to salvage a bronze medal, beating Ghana 1-0 in the third-place match. Johnson Bwalya starred for Zambia, scoring the game’s lone goal in the 51st minute.

That goal helped Zambia set a new scoring record for a single AFCON tournament, a mark that lasted until 2008.
