  • Jadon Sancho has completed a loan move to his former club, Borussia Dortmund
  • It ended the turbulence of the past months after a public spat with Erik ten Hag
  • Manchester United signed Sancho and four other players in the summer of 2021

Jadon Sancho’s travail at Manchester United is temporarily over, at least until he gets sold permanently or he returns to the club - if he outlasts the underfire Erik ten Hag.

The English winger returned to his former club, Borussia Dortmund, on loan for the rest of the season after refusing to apologise amid a spat between him and the manager.

He joined the Red Devils in the summer of 2021 for a reported £73 million alongside four other players, including Cristiano Ronaldo.

Sports Brief looks at the other four players signed and how they fared or are faring at the club, as first analysed by Planet Football.

Players Man Utd signed alongside Sancho

1. Cristiano Ronaldo

The five-time Ballon d'Or winner enjoyed a rousing homecoming after returning to the club 12 years after he left for Real Madrid in 2009. He had a brilliant first season, scoring 24 goals in all competitions. Things went downhill in the second season after issues with ten Hag. His contract was mutually terminated following an explosive interview with Piers Morgan. He moved to Saudi Arabia and joined Al-Nassr.

2. Raphael Varane

The Red Devils snapped up the experienced defender from Real Madrid in the summer of 2021. Varane's time at the club has been highs and lows. Per Mirror UK, the former France international has fallen out with the manager and could leave the club in the summer after the club opted against triggering the one-year extension clause in his contract.

3. Tom Heaton

The veteran goalkeeper came through United’s academy and left the club permanently in 2010. He was re-signed as a backup to David de Gea in 2021 and has only featured in two Carabao Cup games and a Champions League cameo since then.

4. Paul McShane

Few knew that the veteran Irish defender signed for United as a player-coach in 2021. McShane retired a year later, in 2022, and works as a professional development phase coach at Carrington. He also works as an assistant coach for the Ireland U21 team.

Varane could leave Manchester United

Sports Brief also reported on Varane potentially leaving Manchester United at the end of the season after his reported spat with ten Hag and Sir Jim Ratcliffe’s takeover.

The defender is among the high-profile names whose spell at the club could be over due to the INEOS takeover, along with his former Real Madrid teammate, Casemiro.
