  • Playing at the Africa Cup of Nations is a dream for any African footballer
  • It is even sweeter playing alongside your sibling to defend the country's flag
  • Many sets of brothers have played together for their countries at AFCON

The Africa Cup of Nations is an important tournament for footballers, who get to represent their nations on the biggest stage.

The tournament is also a family affair. Over the years, we've seen brothers defend the flag of their countries on the pitch, a feeling that is almost incomparable.

Since the inaugural AFCON tournament in 1957, several pairs of brothers have shared the pitch.

Sports Brief explores siblings who have played together at the AFCON, per CAF.

AFCON siblings over the years

Kolo and Yaya Toure - Ivory Coast

These two Ivory Coast legends represented their country in several editions of the AFCON. They played together in the 2006, 2008, 2010, 2012, 2013 & 2015 tournaments, and the last one brought the long-awaited title.

Both players played for some of Europe's top sides like Arsenal, Manchester City, Barcelona and Liverpool. They've gone on to become coaches in Europe.

Andre and Jordan Ayew - Ghana

When your father is a three-time African Footballer of the Year and European Cup winner, you have no choice but to become a footballer. Andre and Jordan will be playing in their sixth AFCON tournament. They nearly ended their AFCON drought in 2015 but lost to the Toure brothers on penalties.

André Kana Biyik and François Omam Biyik - Cameroon

The Biyik brothers played together in three AFCON tournaments (1988, 1990 and 1992). These two brothers have iconic World Cup moments. Andre was shown a red card against Diego Maradona's Argentina while Francois scored the famous winning goal, per the Guardian.

It remains one of the greatest performances by an African team in the World Cup.

Hossam and Ibrahim Hassan - Egypt

The Hassan brothers not only played together at AFCON but also managed to win two titles in 1986 and 1998.

Hossam is Egypt's all-time top scorer and retired with three AFCON titles. He is arguably Egypt's greatest-ever player.

Alain and Bertrand Traoré - Burkina Faso

The Traore brothers have been part of Burkina Faso's memorable performances at AFCON in the last few years. They have played together in the 2015 and 2017 AFCON. They had to settle for the bronze medal in the 2017 edition.

Sambou and Mustapha Yatabaré - Mali

These two represented Mali together in the 2015 and 2017 tournaments. Their country is yet to win an AFCON title, but there's optimism they can leave their mark in Ivory Coast. The Yatabare brothers are now retired.

Christopher and Felix Katongo - Zambia

The Chipolopolo stunned the continent by winning the 2012 AFCON title, beating favourites Ivory Coast on penalties. The Katongo brothers were part of that team.

Kenneth and Mordon Malitoli were the first Zambian brothers to play at AFCON. They represented Zambia in the 1994 and 1996 tournaments.

Italo and Luciano Vassalo - Ethiopia
