- Arsenal fans have called for the club to sign a new proven striker with urgency
- Kai Havertz failed to inspire in the role as they were knocked out of the FA Cup
- Two late goals helped a second-fiddle Liverpool side bypass Mikel Arteta's side
Piers Morgan has torn into Arsenal coach, Mikel Arteta, asking him to step up in the January transfer window to save the club's floundering season.
The Gunners lost their third successive match across all competitions against Liverpool in the third round of the FA Cup at the Emirates Stadium.
Arsenal were expected to make light of Jurgen Klopp's charges, considering they were playing at home against a second-string Liverpool squad. The Reds were without their two most important players, Mohamed Salah and Virgil Van Dijk.
However, the hosts fluffed their lines repeatedly with Kai Havertz, Bukayo Saka, and skipper Martin Odegaard particularly guilty of missing high-profile chances.
Liverpool needed an own goal from Jakub Kiwior in the 80th minute to break the deadlock before Luis Diaz scored in stoppage time to knock Arsenal out.
Fans ask questions about Arsenal's Havertz
Questions were again asked of Havertz's suitability in Arteta's side. The German was used as a number nine in the absence of Gabriel Jesus.
However, the former Chelsea man was slow to make decisions, provoking the wrath of fans online led by top journalist Morgan, who is a known Arsenal fan.
"We didn’t need a new goalkeeper, and we didn’t need Havertz for £67m. We needed a proper striker. This awful run is on you, Mikel Arteta - stop being so stubborn and sign someone who can score goals, or our whole season will be over very soon," he said on social media.
After the FA Cup elimination, Arteta declined to commit to pursuing a new striker in the January transfer window, instead promising to improve the players he has.
Arsenal boss Arteta open to January signings
Football"At the moment, it does not look realistic. What my job is, and what we have to do, is improve our players and try to get better results with the players we have," he said, as quoted by the Evening Standard.
The club has been linked with a move for Brentford's Ivan Toney, who is set to return from his long-term ban.
Liverpool players celebrate with fan
One Liverpool fan had a moment he will never forget when he celebrated the team's goal against Arsenal.
The supporter was hit on the head by both Darwin Nunez and Ibrahima Konate before his hat was stolen.
A video of the moment has since gone viral, with fans left in stitches, as Sports Brief previously reported.
