  • The Napoli forward has charged the Super Eagles to go for the title
  • Nigeria is in Group A with Ivory Coast, Equatorial Guinea and Guinea Bissau

Victor Osimhen is optimistic that the present Super Eagles team are capable of ending Nigeria’s long wait for a fourth continental title by winning the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations.

The three-time African champions have failed to win the AFCON since 2013 when Steven Keshi led the team to the title over ten years ago, defeating Burkina Faso 1-0 in the final.

Speaking after arriving at the Super Eagles camp in Abu Dhabi, Osimhen stated his belief in the present crop of players in the national team as he charged them to go for the title, All Nigeria Soccer reports.

"The most important thing for us now is to go to Ivory Coast and win the tournament, I believe in this group, we have bunch of talented players to execute the job, fingers crossed and we are going to do so well."

The reigning CAF Player of the Year finished the 2023 AFCON qualifiers with ten goals and hopes to lead Nigeria to glory when the competition kicks off in the Ivory Coast from January 13 to February 11.

Osimhen set for Napoli exit

Meanwhile, Victor Osimhen could be on his way out of Napoli despite signing a one-year contract extension with the reigning Serie A champions as Chelsea are closing in on the striker, Daily Post reports.

The 25-year-old forward, who now has a release clause of around £112m, is expected to sign a pre-contract agreement with Chelsea in January before joining the Blues permanently in the summer.

Chelsea have been keen to add a top centre-forward to their ranks for the majority of this season and have Osimhen at the top of their list.

Victor Osimhen gets standing ovation

Earlier, Sports Brief reported that the Super Eagles are proud of Victor Osimhen’s latest achievement and have celebrated him for being crowned as the 2023 CAF African Player of the Year.

The 25-year-old forward beat Egypt’s Mohamed Salah and Morocco’s Achraf Hakimi to the prestigious award after guiding Napoli to the Serie A title last season.

Osimhen, who arrived at the Super Eagles camp in Abu Dhabi ahead of the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations, was celebrated by his national team teammates, who applauded his achievements.
