  • Timo Werner is close to joining Tottenham Hotspur on a six-month loan
  • The forward spent two years at Chelsea before returning to Germany
  • He has fallen down the pecking order at RB Leipzig since returning

Former Chelsea striker Timo Werner is close to having a taste of Premier League football yet again as he edges near a move to Tottenham Hotspur on loan.

Werner spent two seasons at Chelsea after joining the Blues in 2020 for a reported £47.5m fee, snubbing Liverpool but failed to have a consistent impact at the club.

Despite his flaws, he contributed to winning the club's second UEFA Champions League title under compatriot Thomas Tuchel, who replaced Frank Lampard in January 2021.

He returned to RB Leipzig for half the price he joined the London outfit in 2022, but his career has not remained the same, prompting a move away this winter.

Werner close to joining Tottenham

Per Sky Germany, Leipzig and Tottenham are close to reaching an agreement for the 27-year-old to spend the second half of the season in the Premier League.

Ange Postecoglou will be without Son Heung-min for a month as he departs for the Asia Cup. Harry Kane, who also left in the summer, was not adequately replaced.

The Stuttgart-born attacker scored just 10 league goals during his two-year spell at Stamford Bridge and most notably scored his first competitive goal against Spurs.

Postecoglou has guided the team to fifth on the table, six points off the first position, despite losing many key players to injuries and not having Yves Bissouma for seven games due to suspension.

Per Transfermarkt, since leaving Stamford Bridge to return to Leipzig, the speedster has scored 11 league goals in 35 league games, but featuring in eight league games this season means he wanted a move away to boost his chances of making Germany’s squad for Euro 2020 on home soil under Julian Nagelsmann.

Werner warns Nkunku about Chelsea

Sports Brief previously reported on Werner’s message to Christopher Nkunku ahead of the French attacker’s move to Stamford Bridge in the summer.

The two were teammates at Leipzig, and after one failed in London, the Blues went for the other, and the German warned his former mate about what to expect.
