  • Manchester City will play Huddersfield in the FA Cup third-round
  • The holders will continue their tradition of ignoring the sleeve patch
  • They did not use it when they beat Manchester United last season

Manchester City will begin the defence of their FA Cup crown with a visit of Huddersfield Town to the Etihad Stadium and continue an eight-year-long tradition.

City beat neighbours Manchester United 2-1 in last season’s final, with former captain Ilkay scoring 13 seconds into the game before adding a second in the early minutes of the second half.

The win helped the Citizens complete a historic treble after winning their third consecutive Premier League title and their first-ever UEFA Champions League.

They were stopped from completing the domestic treble by Southampton, who beat Pep Guardiola’s men 2-0 in the Carabao Cup quarter-final and boasted about it later.

Why City don't wear FA Cup sleeves patch

City last used the FA Cup sleeves patch on their jersey in the 2015/16 season.

Per Mirror UK, this is because the competition sponsor Emirates is a direct aviation competitor of their main sponsor, Etihad Airways, hence declining to wear the red patch.

Since they stopped wearing the patch, they have won the competition twice, both of which came under Guardiola, the first in the 2018/19 season.

City beat Watford 6-0 in the final and opted to write “Choose Etihad” in front of their shirt to aim a subtle dig at Emirates.

Regardless of their display, the ribbon attached to the trophy and the medal had Emirates written on it, which they can not ignore.

Rodri will miss the game following the death of his grandmother, while Norwegian striker Erling Haaland is a doubt as he continues to recover from a foot injury.

Southampton troll Man City

Sports Brief reported on Southampton trolling Man City after the treble winners flaunted all their trophies, including the FIFA Club World Cup.

The picture on social media was captioned with “We’ve won it all, we’ve won the lot!” but the relegated club responded with “almost”, reminding them Nathan Jones’ led team denied them the total package.
