Shay was born on April 20, 1976, in Lifford, County Donegal, Ireland, and he is the son of Seamus Given (father) and Agnes Given (mother).

Even though he never made it onto the first team, Given spent time training with Celtic's youth squad in Scotland as a teenager. He joined Blackburn Rovers in 1994 and spent three years there, during which he went on loan to Swindon Town twice.

After that, in 1997, Given joined Newcastle United, where he remained until 2009. He played in 344 league games during his 12-year stint at St. James' Park.

The goalkeeper originally signed a four-and-a-half-year deal with Manchester City in February 2009. He debuted in 2011 for Aston Villa and spent November 2013 on loan with Middlesbrough.

Stoke City released Given following the 2016–17 season, even though he had signed a two-year deal with the club in July 2015. At the age of 42, Given retired from football in April 2018.

Among Given's many appearances as a pundit for RTE are the 2020 European Championship and Nations League matches. He also did commentary for Amazon, Sky Sports, and BT Sport.
