The rankings were released by the International Federation of Football History & Statistics (IFFHS) at the turn of the New Year.

The Kenyan’s journey to becoming a standout goal-scorer began when she joined the eight-time Czech League champions as a free agent, following a stellar campaign with Belarusian side, FC Minsk.

Per the IFFHS, Temwa Chawinga from Malawi claimed the top spot as the leading female goal-scorer of 2023, marking the first non-European to achieve this feat.

The 25-year-old succeeded Jenni Hermoso of Spain (2021) and Fenna Kalma of the Netherlands (2022) as only the third award winner since the women's category's inception.

Chawinga's incredible total of 63 goals across all competitions also means she had also outscored every male player in 2023, as reported by Forbes.

She netted a remarkable 51 goals for her Chinese club, Wuhan Jianghan, the highest by any player globally for their domestic side.

Additionally, she contributed 12 goals for the Malawi national team, finishing 24 goals ahead of the second-placed woman on the list, Mexico and CF Pachuca's Verónica Charlyn Corral.

In the Chinese Women's Super League, Chawinga scored 30 goals, adding 15 in the Chinese National Cup and six in the Chinese Women's FA Cup.

Nekesa makes Slavia Prague UCL appearance

In December 2023, Sports Brief reported when Nekesa made a cameo for Slavia Prague in a goalless draw against St. Polten in the UEFA Women's Champions League.

Coach Karel Piták opted to field a slightly different starting XI from the one that lost 1-0 to Brann Women earlier in the season, leaving the former Minsk forward benched.

At the time, the Czech League side had failed to keep a clean sheet in 11 of their last 12 games, averaging at least two goals in their six away games in all competitions.
