The Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) countdown is on, and Ivory Coast is raring to host the rest of the continent.
Several countries are considered strong contenders to win and secure the title in the upcoming 34th edition of Africa's prized most prestigious football tournament.
While the Super Eagles of Nigeria are among the favourites to win AFCON, doubts linger among fans and stakeholders about the managerial capabilities of Jose Peseiro in leading the West African nation to glory.
Concerns stem from the team's recent performance, as they have secured victories in only two of their last five matches, including encounters with Lesotho and Zimbabwe, as reported by Sofascore.
Nonetheless, in the build-up to the tournament, a football stakeholder has aired his take on the former SC Braga gaffer’s ability, dubbing his appointment as coach of the three-time AFCON champions as a mistake.
NPFL stakeholder slams Peseiro
NPFL stakeholder and former Gombe United chairman Ahmed Gara-Gombe has strongly expressed his opinion that appointing Portuguese coach Jose Peseiro for the Super Eagles is one of the Nigerian Football Federation's (NFF) most significant errors. Holding no punches, the ex-NFF presidency aspirant, speaking with Channels TV, emphasized:
“In the first place, hiring Peseiro for the Super Eagles was one of the greatest mistakes we have ever made in the history of our football. Since he took over, what is the outcome?”
"Nigeria lacks a distinct pattern, a playing style, and we struggle to secure victories. Let us go and keep on trying with our cut-and-paste strategy, our wobble-and-fumble approach."

FootballThe words of Gara-Gombe are largely echoed through the Nigerian sports community as many remain sceptical about the Portuguese’s ability to lead Nigeria to the highly coveted AFCON showpiece in Ivory Coast.
