Ghanaian defender Jonathan Mensah has sealed a move to Major League Soccer side New England Revolution ahead of the 2024 season.

The FIFA U20 World Cup winner joins New England Revolution on a one-year deal with the option of extending for a further season.

Mensah is a veteran in the MLS, having already spent six years at Columbus Crew, where he won the championship in 2020.

Before moving to New England, he spent a season at San Jose Earthquakes. Mensah will reunite with former manager Caleb Porter at New England.

“Jonathan is a person of the utmost character who embodies strong leadership qualities. During our time together in Columbus, he is someone my staff and I could depend on each and every week, bringing professionalism and passion to the pitch,” said Porter, as quoted by the club's official website.
“Jonathan knows what it takes to win a championship and will bolster our centre-back depth and bring a positive presence to the locker room.”

Mensah has rich experience on the international stage, making 70 appearances for the Black Stars of Ghana. He was part of the U20 team that won the FIFA World Cup in 2009 in Egypt.

MLS Champions sign Derrick Jones

Earlier, Sports Brief reported that 2023 Major League Soccer champions, Columbus Crew, have announced the signing of versatile Ghanaian midfielder Derrick Jones.

The 26-year-old signed a deal that will keep him at the Ohio-based club through 2025, with an option of a further year in 2026.

Jones joined the Black and Gold after leaving Charlotte FC, where he spent the last two campaigns, racking up 44 appearances in the regular season.

Mensah ends Columbus Crew spell

Sports Brief also reported that Major League Soccer side, San Jose Earthquakes signed Ghana defender Jonathan Mensah before the 2023 season.

The veteran MLS centre-back joins San Jose from former champions Columbus Crew.

Mensah is entering his sixth year in the American soccer league, having spent five years with the Black and Golds.
