The 2023 Africa Cup of Nations kicks off in nine days in Ivory Coast as the biggest stars on the continent battle for the gold trophy in the French-speaking West African nation.

Sports Brief looks at the five countries that have hit a century of goals in the AFCON tournament.

Countries with 100+ AFCON goals

1. Egypt

Unsurprisingly, seven-time champions, the Pharaohs of Egypt, have scored the most goals in the competition’s history with 168. They have achieved this in 107 games, the most of any nation in the tournament, including 10 finals. Per Transfermarkt, Hassan El-Shazly is the country’s top scorer in the event with 12 goals.

2. Ivory Coast

2023 host country Ivory Coast is the second highest scoring nation in the tournament, with 143 goals scored in 99 games at 24 tournaments. They were victorious in 1992 and 2015. Laurent Pokou scored the most goals for the country at AFCON with 14.

3. Nigeria

Per Inside The Games, the Super Eagles of Nigeria are the most decorated team in AFCON history, with three gold, four silver and a record eight bronze, winning all third-place playoffs. They have scored 137 goals in 97 games. 13 of which were scored by the late Rashidi Yekini.

3. Cameroon

Five-time champions Cameroon is tied with Nigeria for the third-most goals scored at the tournament with 137 from 91 games, six less than the Super Eagles. The Indomitable Lions’ top scorer at the competition is Samuel Eto’o, who scored 18 goals - the highest of any player at the event.

4. Ghana

The Black Stars have won the tournament four times, including their AFCON debut in 1963 where they beat Sudan in the final. They have scored 133 goals in 102 games. Andre Ayew, son of legendary footballer Abedi Pele, has the most goals for the country with 10.
