Manchester United goalkeeper Andre Onana believes he knows why he receives so much criticism.
Having come off a strong season at Inter Milan and United boss Erik ten Hag took up his services in the summer of 2023, signing the Cameroon international for £47.2m.
The 27-year-old has, however, had a less-than-ideal start to life at Old Trafford and has endured 14 defeats across all competitions.
A series of high-profile errors from Onana in some crucial games against Galatasaray and Bayern Munich saw United crash out of the Champions League in the group stage, which only increased criticism of the former Inter man.
Manchester United’s second-choice goalkeeper, Altay Bayindir, is now set to stake a claim to be the leading man between the sticks when Onana leaves United for international duty with Cameroon, who are participating in the Africa Cup of Nations.
Onana confident Man United can turn season
Onana recently spoke candidly to Sky Sport Italia where he opened up on his time with United, as he admitted he has made mistakes, which he claims are ‘part of learning’.
"Mistakes are part of learning,” he started.
According to Onana, who has kept just eight clean sheets in 28 appearances for United, people criticize him so much because much is expected of him.
He added: “We know that people expect a lot from me and that's why they criticise me so much. But for me it's not a problem, I'm used to it. The same thing also happened at Inter: at the beginning they criticised me, but look how it ended,"

FootballOnana likened United’s current woes to Inter, who he claims were ruled out before eventually reaching the Champions League final last season.
The shot-stopper also reiterated that he retains the manager's support, despite a tough start to life at Manchester United.
"When you see where I come from, a very humble family that had practically nothing, and you start playing football with friends and colleagues, in Cameroon, you can't even imagine being able to have this career I've worked all my life to get to where I am now," he went on.
What next for United?
According to the Manchester United website, the Red Devils' next game is in the FA Cup, where they will take on Wigan Athletic on Monday, January 8. This will be followed by a crunch Premier League game at Old Trafford against Tottenham Hotspur six days later.
