In a thrilling conclusion to the five-day Eliud Owalo Super Cup, Gor Mahia emerged victorious over the Nyanza Combined team with a 2-0 win at Nyilima grounds in Asembo, Siaya County, on December 30, 2023.
The Nyanza Combined side, consisting of players from the four Luo Nyanza counties, had previously secured their place in the tournament by participating in the inaugural edition, won by Homa Bay Combined.
Assistant coach Michael Nam and Team Manager Victor Nyaoro led the Gor Mahia team in the absence of coach Johnathan McKinstry, who was on holiday.
Gor Mahia's striker, Benson Omala, opened the scoring, and Alvin ‘Chicha’ Ochieng’ sealed the victory with a late goal, as reported by the KBC.
Eliud Owalo, the Cabinet Secretary for Information, Communication, and Digital Economy, expressed satisfaction with the talent showcased in the tournament but acknowledged the need for more efforts to unearth football talent. He pledged that the 2024 edition of the Eliud Owalo Super Cup would be more extensive, incorporating grassroots teams for a more significant impact.
"We want to tap into talents at the grassroots level and closely monitor their progress. Football unites our people, brings happiness, and we will leverage it to elevate the game," said Owalo, as reported by The Nation.
During the awards ceremony, Owalo, accompanied by Gor Mahia legends, presented both teams with a prize of Sh400,000 each. He stressed the importance of holding such tournaments yearly to enhance the talent identification strategy.
The Luo Nyanza counties—Migori, Homa Bay, Kisumu, and Siaya—participated in the inaugural tournament.
Nyanza Combined coach Charles Odera highlighted talented players identified during the tournament, including Adams Oloo, Clinton Ramirez, Glen Masava, Brian Orido, Jack Bruce, Wycliffe Opuro, and David Ogech.
