FootballMetro UK reports that ten Hag's move to sub off Mainoo at halftime has been blamed for United's defeat at City Ground.
Mainoo had helped quell the threat posed by Forest's midfield during the opening 45 minutes.
However, it was a huge surprise when he failed to emerge for the second half, with his place taken by Scott McTominay.
Ten Hag's decision to sub off the youngster was widely condemned, with United legend Peter Schmeichel saying:
"There was no need to make that change when you have other players on the pitch that are doing absolutely nothing for you. I question the substitution and what that signals to the rest of the team," Schmeichel pointed out.
"If you want to make an impact, you have to leave impact players on. That had a very big effect on the game," he added.
