Top 5 players missing in Nigeria's AFCON squad

The 2023 Africa Cup of Nations will kick off in a few days, and Nigeria, being one of the favourites to win the competition, named a strong squad, but a few top players were missing.

Sports Brief looks at the top five players missing from the final list.

Paul Onauchu

The Nigerian striker was initially included in the 40-man provisional list but failed to make the final as Peseiro preferred Umar Sadiq to him.

Terem Moffi

The former Lorient striker is one of the surprise exclusion from the final list due to his performance for OGC Nice in the French Ligue 1.

Moffi has scored six goals and provided two assists in the French league this season, according to a report by Transfermarkt.

Nathan Tella

The former Southampton forward got his first call-up into the Nigerian national team setup but missed out on the final 25-man squad for the Africa Cup of Nations.

Tyronne Ebuehi

Ebuehi has been a regular in the Super Eagles squad for some time but missed the cut despite being a regular for Empoli in the Italian Serie A.

Jamilu Collins

The Nigerian international will not be making a third appearance at the AFCON after making the cut in the last two editions.

The Cardiff City fullback was one of the top players dropped from the preliminary squad.

Nigeria to face Cape Verde ahead of AFCON

Earlier, Sports Brief reported that the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations in Ivory Coast is less than a month away and qualified countries are preparing feverishly ahead of the competition which begins on January 13.

Most of the teams have also lined up enticing pre-AFCON friendlies for early next month including the Black stars of Ghana, Nigeria, Egypt and Cameroon.

The Super Eagles of Nigeria, who will be camping in Saudi Arabia, will face Burkina Faso and Cape Verde.
