2023 Major League Soccer champions, Columbus Crew have announced the signing of versatile Ghanaian midfielder Derrick Jones.

The 26-year-old signed a deal that will keep him at the Ohio-based club through to 2025, with an option of a further year in 2026.

Jones joined the Black and Gold after leaving Charlotte FC, where he spent the last two campaigns, racking up 44 appearances in the regular season.

“Derrick is a versatile player and a true competitor,” said Columbus Crew President and General Manager Tim Bezbatchenko, as quoted by the club's official website.
“He adds significant experience and depth to our roster, which will be critical as we have an increased number of matches following our MLS Cup championship season, including Concacaf Champions Cup.”

The former USA youth international previously played for the Philadelphia Union and the Houston Dynamos.

Although he was born in Kumasi, Ghana, Jones moved to the United States at an early age, featuring for the U20 national team at the 2017 FIFA U20 World Cup.

He joins compatriots and MLS winner Yaw Yeboah for the 2024 season.

Yeboah wins MLS with Columbus Crew

Earlier, Sports Brief reported that Yaw Yeboah's first-half strike proved decisive as Columbus Crew defeated Los Angeles FC to win their third Major League Soccer title in an exciting final at the Lower.com Field.

The Ghana international slotted home just four minutes after Cucho Hernandez had given the Gold and Blacks the lead.

Gabonese forward Denis Bouanga pulled one back for LAFC, but it was too late as the 2020 champions reclaimed the title.

Yeboah receives heroic welcome after MLS triumph

Sports Brief also reported that Columbus Crew winger, Yaw Yeboah was given a heroic welcome following his return to Ghana after winning the Major League Soccer title.

The Ghana international scored the winner as the Ohio-based club defeated Los Angeles FC to win the 2023 title.

Yeboah is back in Ghana for a short vacation before returning to the United States for pre-season in January.
