FootballAFCON 2023: Former Ghana International Addresses the Country’s Title Drought
- Ghana have not won the Africa Cup of Nations since 1982
- They finished second in 1992, 2010 and 2015 and failed to reach the last 16 in the last edition
- Former Ghana international Laryea Kingston says Ghana can win if they apologize
Ghana are looking to end a 41-year-old wait for the Africa Cup of Nations title next year.
The Black Stars have struggled to lift the continental prize since 1982 but have come close in 1992, 2010 and 2015, where they finished as runners-up.
Former Ghana international Laryea Kingston believes a few things must be done for the drought to end.
Ghana is a giant in African football but their performances in the Africa Cup of Nations over the last few decades have not resulted in silverware.
In the 34th edition set to start in January 2024, Ghana will face tough challenges if they want to win the title. Nations like Nigeria, defending champions Senegal, former winners Algeria, Egypt, Morocco and Tunisia.
The Black Stars have the talent and quality to win the tournament, but so do those other teams. Ghana are in Group B alongside Egypt, Cape Verde and Mozambique.
Chris Hughton's side exited the last-16 and group stage in the last two editions. In the 2022 edition, they were stunned by newcomers Comoros, who beat them 3-2, a result that saw them finish bottom of their group, per Guardian.
When will Ghana's drought end?
According to Laryea Kingston, Blast Stars former player, said Ghana can only end the drought if players who were hurt can be apologized to.
"There's something wrong. The national team has hurt so many former players, including myself. So someone will sit back and not party for the Black Stars if they're playing," via Modern Ghana.
"Authorities have to go to every player and plead with them to let everything go with the quality that we have; we can win it again."

FootballGhana will have to right the wrongs of the last edition. West Ham star Mohammed Kudus will spearhead Ghana's attack, and there will be huge expectations for the team to go deep into the tournament.
Hughton names 55-man provisional squad
Sports Brief earlier reported on Black Stars boss Chris Hughton naming a 55-man provisional squad ahead of the 2024 AFCON.
Hughton included England-born West Bromwich Albion forward, Brandon Thomas-Asante as well as 11 home-based players in his team.
The team, which will be pruned to 26 men, also sees youngster Forson Amankwah earning his place in Ghana's squad for the first time.
