African giants Al Ahly ended their 2023 FIFA Club World Cup on a high after beating Japan's Urawa Reds 4-2 to secure the bronze medal in Saudi Arabia.
South Africa's Percy Tau was on target in the end-to-end match, which also saw him break the record of his compatriot Quinton Fortune in the competition.
The curtain came down on the 2023 FIFA Club World Cup, with continental giants going head to head. Champions League reigning champions Manchester City thrashed Copa Libertadores champions Fluminense 4-0 to win the title.
However, the third playoff match between Al Ahly and Urawa Reds stole the show.
Yasser Ibrahim scored Al Ahly's first goal before Tau doubled the lead in the 25th minute. The Japanese side cancelled both goals by the 54th minute. Al Ahly scored their third and fourth late in the game to seal the victory.
No African team has won the competition, which was inaugurated in the 1999/2000 season, per Transfermarkt.
Percy Tau surpasses Fortune
With his goal, Percy Tau has now scored three goals in the tournament. It makes him South Africa's all-time top scorer in the competition.
Tau scored his first goal in the competition in 2016 for Mamelodi Sundowns, then scored another for the Egyptian giants in 2022.
Fortune bagged two goals for Manchester United in the 2000 edition, per GOAL.
Tau has scored six goals in 18 appearances for Al Ahly this season.
