  • The EU Justice Court has ruled in favour of the European Super League
  • Real Madrid and Barcelona are the two loyal clubs from the inception
  • The Catalan club risks the wrath of UEFA over their involvement

The EU Court ruling favoured the formation of the European Super League, but UEFA and other governing bodies will not go down without a fight.

The idea began in 2021, but it was quickly clamped down by football associations and fans of English football, who staged massive protests at stadiums demanding their clubs withdraw.

After the court ruling, many clubs have come out to antagonise the breakaway league, but Real Madrid and Barcelona remained loyal as part of the founding clubs.

Why Barca could be banned from UCL

According to German publication Welt, Barcelona could be the first sacrificial lamb of the ESL return as UEFA are set to revisit their account books, which is described as a mess.

The club recorded a profit of €304 million last year, but the European football governing body claimed most came from economic levers and only income directly from football counts.

This could earn the club as much as a three-year expulsion from the UEFA Champions League, though sources inside the club denied knowledge of this to Mundo Deportivo.

If taken by UEFA, the action would be a retaliation for their loyalty to the ESL, as they are looking for legal means to punish the clubs after the court ruled their initial approaches unlawful.

Per Reuters, Juventus were the third team to stay despite the initial backlash but were forced to leave in July, which helped UEFA and FIGC lessen their punishment over capital gains falsification.

The same could be done to Barcelona, which could come as early as next season.
