  • The controversial European Super League came to the fore back in 2021
  • The tournament sparked controversy, with FIFA and UEFA opposed to it
  • However, the European Court of Justice has greenlit the ESL's formation

Manchester United and Atletico Madrid have become the first clubs to respond to the latest developments surrounding the controversial European Super League.

The formation of the tournament, which would see some of Europe's top teams compete in a new competition, was met with opposition back in 2021.

However, Sportbible reports that the European Court of Justice ruled on the matter on Thursday, December 21, siding with the ESL.

The court ruled that UEFA and FIFA acted against competition law by barring its formation.

The ruling has now set the stage for the possible reintroduction of the tournament in a new proposed format that would see up to 64 teams take part across three divisions.

Man United, Atletico react to ESL ruling

United and Atletico have now delivered their stance on the European Super League in the wake of the ruling. The La Liga club has released a statement openly distancing themselves from the tournament.

On their part, United, who were initially a part of the tourney, also distanced themselves from any involvement this time around.

"Our position has not changed. We remain fully committed to participation in UEFA competitions, and to positive cooperation with UEFA, the Premier League, and fellow clubs through the ECA on the continued development of the European game," Man United said in a statement.

Meanwhile, La Liga giants, Barcelona and Real Madrid are among the clubs pushing for the formation of the controversial European tournament.

Carabao Cup semi-final draw

Earlier, Sports Brief reported Chelsea and Liverpool have discovered their opponents for the Carabao Cup semi-final, with the two English giants among the four teams competing.

The Blues stunned Newcastle United 4-2 on post-match penalties in the round of eight to sail through, while the Reds hammered West Ham United at Anfield to reach the last four.

In a semi-final draw for the Carabao Cup conducted on Wednesday night, Chelsea were drawn against Middlesbrough, with Liverpool scheduled to battle Fulham for a finals spot.
