Mamelodi Sundowns are one step closer to the knockout stages of this season's CAF Champions League after their hard-fought victory over Pyramids FC.

The Group A clash saw the South African giants put up an impressive performance away from home, leaving the Egyptians' chances hanging by a thread.

Rulani Mokwena's Masandawana opened the scoring of the CAF CL clash in the 17th minute when midfielder, Teboho Mokoena found the back of the net.

Pyramids had fought hard to restore parity but the opposition defence was resolute.

Sundowns then had the first chance of the encounter after Ribeiro Costa received a cross inside the box, but despite the Egyptians managing to clear the danger, the ball fell to the path of Mokoena, who netted the only goal of the game.

Second-half substitute for Pyramids FC, Mostafa Fathi failed to make the anticipated impact, as English Ahram reports.

Sundowns effectively controlled the game, preventing the home team from creating any significant scoring opportunities during the second half.

Sundowns hold on for CAF CL win

With only a minute left in injury time, Pyramids' Mohamed Hamdi came close to scoring the equaliser, but his shot narrowly missed the post.

Following this result, Sundowns are now at the top of their group with seven points, leading second-placed TP Mazembe on goal difference.

Pyramids FC, on the other hand, find themselves at the bottom with four points, with a slim chance of advancing to the competition's quarter-finals.

Teko Modise hails Sundowns

Sports Brief also previously reported that former Sundowns midfielder, Teko Modise has hailed Rulani Mokwena's coaching tactics.

He discussed how the strategies have brought prolonged success to the team, with the side dominating the PSL over the last few years.

While Sundowns have had great players in the yellow jersey, they have also had coaches who emphasised playing effective football.
