Kenya, Tanzania, and Uganda are set to join forces as co-hosts for the prestigious 2024 African Nations Championship (CHAN).

The announcement was made by CECAFA President, Wallace Karia during an annual general meeting held on December 16.

Karia stated each of the three nations would contribute one stadium to the tournament, plus an additional fourth venue in Zanzibar.

He confirmed the granting of the hosting rights to the three countries ahead of the tournament in September next year and further revealed plans to propose the inclusion of all four CECAFA teams in the draw, fostering healthy competition among the hosts, as reported by Citizen Digital.

This collaborative effort comes on the heels of the triumphant joint bid by the three nations, securing the rights to host the Africa Cup of Nations in 2027. The successful bid marked a significant achievement as the trio beat competition from Zambia and a joint Nigeria-Benin bid for that edition.

CAF chief confirms 2025 AFCON hosts

Morocco emerged as the replacement hosts for AFCON in 2025 after Guinea was stripped of hosting rights in October 2022 due to worries about facilities and infrastructure. The North Africans now have the opportunity to showcase their capabilities and enhance Africa's prospects of hosting another World Cup.

CAF President, Patrice Motsepe stressed that the decision-making process considered the level of infrastructure provided by bids, encompassing facilities, accommodation, and medical facilities.

"The decision was made today to focus on African unity, development, and growth, given the withdrawal of those countries. Morocco is investing significantly for 2025. Their bid to host the World Cup is not only for Morocco but for the entire continent,” Motsepe said as quoted by the BBC.

In celebrating the success of Morocco's bid, Motsepe underscored that all the options for both tournaments would have made Africa proud, aligning with CAF's commitment to fostering unity and progress across the continent.

Kenya begins preparations for AFCON

Sports Brief previously reported that the iconic Moi International Stadium in Kasarani has been closed for major renovations in preparation for the AFCON 2027 tournament.

The ceremony, held inside the stadium on December 15, was presided over by notable Kenyan political figureheads including the Cabinet Secretary of Sports, Ababu Namwamba.

The Ministry seeks to align with the Confederation of African Football's recommendations and fulfil its Sports Infrastructure Master Plan through a comprehensive overhaul.
