  • Itumeleng Khune has accepted the decision to strip him of captaincy with regret
  • The Kaizer Chiefs goalkeeper reportedly turned up to training under the influence
  • The club will put the veteran on a treatment programme until he is fully recovered

In the wake of the decision to strip him of the captain's armband, veteran Kazier Chiefs goalkeeper, Itumeleng Khune has expressed both acceptance and regret regarding the club's call.

The shot-stopper found himself excluded from first-team activities on December 13, 2023, due to behavioural issues, specifically allegedly attending training under the influence of alcohol.

In response, Khune has acknowledged the decision made by Chiefs, expressed remorse for his actions, and reportedly apologised to his teammates.

Sources close to the seasoned goalkeeper have indicate that he perceives the captaincy removal as a valuable lesson for younger players within the team.

"I think someone like him is experienced enough to know that the club did the right thing about revoking his captaincy. It’s a good example for any current or future players at the club to know that they won’t let such things just slide away," an inside said as quoted by The South African.

The informer added that despite feeling remorseful, Khune viewed the decision as a positive example for current and future club members. Furthermore, reports suggested he recognised the fault in his actions and acknowledged the importance of leading by example.

"[Khune] feels bad because he has been well-behaved for all these years, and something like this happens to him at the later stages of his career. But he is a big boy; he will bounce back from this," an informer told The Citizen.

As Khune serves his suspension, head coach Cavin Johnson will reportedly turn to Bruce Bvuma in the goalkeeping role, although other senior players could step up.

The team is set to face Richards Bay on December 23 at the FNB Stadium, with the hope that Khune will completed a full recover after completing the prescribed programs during his suspension.

Khune’s greatest achievements

Sports Brief previously highlighted Khune’s greatest career achievements, having donned the Kaizer Chiefs jersey for 16 years.

His suspension from the first team after an internal investigation may have taken the shine off the keeper's farewell season.

However, the Amakhosi leader has shown remorse and fans will remember the fond memories he has provided during his career.
