FootballManchester City: Pep Guardiola’s Team Set Unique Record Despite Draw Against Crystal Palace
- Manchester City surrendered a two-goal lead against Crystal Palace
- The treble winners’ poor form in the Premier League continues
- However, they set a unique record despite the disappointing result
Manchester City set a unique Premier League record in their 2-2 draw against Crystal Palace, which proves they’re either the best team in the league or a very wasteful team.
City came into the game having won just once in their last five games, and knowing a win is vital before they head to Saudi Arabia for the FIFA Club World Cup.
The champions led in the first half through Jack Grealish, who, Per BR Football, has now scored in three consecutive league games after his goal drought.
City doubled their lead in the second half through youngster Rico Lewis, who was pumped to score his first Premier League goal and looked to have wrapped up the win for his team.
City set unique PL record
Per Opta, all 10 City’s outfield players in the first half created at least a chance, the first time any team has achieved that feat since data collection began in 2006.
It proved Pep Guardiola’s side are the best in the league and could bring out returns from anywhere in the team, but converting only one of those chances proves they are wasteful.
Palace fought back and left the drama late to walk out of the Etihad Stadium with a point with two goals in the last 20 minutes, including a penalty.
Jean-Philippe Mateta got on the end of Jeffrey Schulpp’s cross in the 76th minute to cut the deficit before the Frenchman won a penalty off Phil Foden, which Michael Olise, whom City had interest in, converted calmly.
Next for City is a semifinal game against Urawa Reds in the Club World Cup.
