The excitement of the African Cup of Nations (AFCON) is gradually taking over the footballing landscape on the continent.

A host of elite players are vying for a coveted spot in the ultimate team to represent their nations proudly on Africa's grandest stage.

One such player eager to secure a place in the competition is Nigeria’s Cyriel Dessers. The 29-year-old forward, who hasn't featured for the Super Eagles since his last call-up in the March international window, is making a determined late effort to be included in the final AFCON squad, set to be unveiled by Jose Peseiro.

Dessers, who recently completed a transfer to the Scottish Premiership club Glasgow Rangers, appears to have found his stride after a challenging stint with Serie A side Cremonese last season.

According to reports from Whoscored, Dessers has contributed to 11 goals in 28 appearances for Philippe Clement’s side since his transfer.

His impressive form, highlighted by a goal and assist against Real Betis, has sparked discussions about a potential recall to the Super Eagles for the former Genk striker. Dessers himself believes he deserves a spot in the final AFCON squad.

Dessers on AFCON squad

In his own words, as quoted by OwnGoalNigeria, Dessers stated,

"The last few times, I was in Nigeria's pre-selection squad but not in the final selection. If you look at other strikers and the form they are in, you understand why.

We have a few players competing for one spot, and the competition in Nigeria is absurd. I could have chosen to play for Belgium, but I opted for Nigeria, and I am happy with my choice."

While the likelihood of Dessers making Jose Peseiro’s final AFCON list remains slim, it's worth noting that his recent impressive form has undoubtedly not harmed his chances.

Osimhen backs Nigeria for AFCON

Earlier, Sports Brief reported Victor Osimhen has declared that Nigeria is ready for the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations and is optimistic the Super Eagles will be one of the major contenders for the title in Ivory Coast.

The Super Eagles last won the tournament in 2013 when Steven Keshi led the team to its third continental title, but they have failed to make the final since then, exiting in the Round of 16 in the 2022 edition.

Osimhen, recently crowned as the 2023 Africa Player of the Year, is confident the Super Eagles are raring to go and have the capacity to defeat other top teams to the AFCON title.
