The iconic Moi International Stadium Kasarani has been closed for major renovations in preparation for the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations.

The ceremony, held inside the stadium on December 15, 2023, was presided over by Cabinet Secretary of Sports Ababu Namwamba, Sports Principal Secretary Peter Tum and Defence Principal Secretary Patrick Mariru.

The Ministry seeks to align with the Confederation of African Football (CAF) recommendations and fulfil its Sports Infrastructure Master Plan through a comprehensive overhaul.

Expressing the ministry's commitment, the Sports PS stressed the goal of transforming Kasarani into a world-standard stadium within the next 12 months.

“We are committed to transforming Kasarani into a world standard stadium in the next 12 months, undertaken in a fashion that observes timeliness, efficiency and cost-effectiveness with the highest standards in mind,” PS Tum was quoted on People Daily.

The 40-year-old stadium will witness improvements in the canopy, terraces, changing rooms, washrooms, media centres, lighting, drainage systems, and the introduction of coded seats, among other state-of-the-art advancements.

PS Mariru reassured the public that the project would be done within the same time frame.

"It will be done within one year and also within the set budget and the highest standard. I'm committing that on behalf of the Ministry of Defence and Kenya Defence Forces,” Mariru says, as reported by Citizen Digital.

In September 2023, Kenya, Uganda and Tanzania won a joint bid to host the 2027 African Cup of Nations, beating strong bids from Senegal, Botswana, and others. The organising committee will allocate the games among the three countries based on their infrastructure and accommodation capabilities.

Kasarani stadium banned

Sports Brief reported in October 2021 that CAF banned Kenya’s two main stadiums, Kasarani and Nyayo, from hosting international matches.

Both stadiums were subjected to intense inspection before the World Cup qualifiers but failed to set the required standards.

The new directive meant Kenya would have to host matches abroad, as the two stadiums failed to meet inspection requirements.
