FootballTeko Modise Explains Reasons for Mamelodi Sundowns Sustained Success
- Mamelodi Sundowns are known for their risky possession tactics
- Teko Modise feels versatile players have enabled Rulani Mokwena to implement that style of play
- Sundowns have won all 11 of their PSL games in the 2023/24 season
Mamelodi Sundowns have dominated the PSL in the last few years, winning six straight titles.
Although they've had great players wear their jerseys, they also had coaches who made sure they played the best football to vanquish their opponents.
Former Sundowns midfielder Teko Modise feels tactics employed by the coaches have brought prolonged success to the team.
Sundowns' possession-based style has overwhelmed teams in the PSL this season. Rulani Mokwena's side have been a nightmare to play against this season.
After beating Cape Town Spurs 3-0 on Wednesday, December 13, they extended their winning streak in the league to 11 straight games.
They sit top of the table with 33 points from 11 games. Cape Town City are second with 25 points but have played three games more.
Masandawana have the best defence in the league, having conceded three goals. Moreover, their attack is also second to none, with 23 goals scored. Their possession-heavy tactics are doing wonders for them.
Modise on Sundowns tactics
The former Bafana Bafana international thinks Mokwena's tactics are working because he has the quality to implement a risky strategy like that.
“It helps coach Rulani [Mokwena] because you have coachable players. If you don’t have the quality, that’s when Mamelodi Sundowns will punish you because you trying to copy them,” Modise told PitchsidePodcast via Far Post.
Building attacks from the back are risky for any team, so having players who are elite on the ball makes things easier.
He added that having versatile footballers on the team gives the coach good options to consider.
