  • Victor Osimhen has achieved a lot before his 25th birthday
  • He won the 2023 CAF African Player of the Year earlier this week
  • Sports Brief compares his stats to those of Samuel Eto'o and Didier Drogba

Earlier this week, Victor Osimhen became the first Nigerian since Nwankwo Kanu to win the CAF African Player of the Year award.

The Napoli striker turns 25 later this month, and although he has accomplished a lot in his career so far, he still has a few more years at the top.

Iconic African strikers like Samuel Eto'o and Didier Drogba won the award multiple times in their careers, but how did they do before their 25th birthdays?

Osimhen has already won a league title in Europe's top five leagues, just like Eto'o and Drogba. The latter were, at some point in their careers, the best strikers in world football.

The Nigerian striker has improved every season with Napoli but had a breakthrough 2022/23 campaign where he scored 26 Serie A goals, which helped Napoli win their first Scudetto in 33 years.

Furthermore, he became the first African player to win the Serie A Golden Boot.

Osimhen's career so far

The 24-year-old has been in Europe for quite a while now, but it took some time for him to get going. He joined Wolfsburg in 2017 and made 12 league appearances without scoring a goal.

He moved to Belgian side Sporting Charleroi on loan in 2018. He bagged 20 goals in 36 games and earned a permanent deal, but French side Lille were watching closely.

He signed with Lille and scored 18 goals in his lone season in France. He was sold to Napoli for a club-record fee of €70 million in 2020. He is now in his fourth season with Napoli.

The Nigerian international has now scored 106 goals in 204 appearances in his club career. He has also bagged 20 goals in 27 appearances for Nigeria.

Eto'o and Drogba's careers

These two strikers left a mark on their clubs in Europe. Drogba is an icon at Chelsea while Eto'o is adored in Barcelona and Inter Milan.

Drogba won two CAF African Player of the Year awards, while Eto'o won four. The Ivory Coast legend was the first African player to win the Premier League Golden Boot in 2007. He made history after claiming a second in 2009/10.

His strike in the 2012 Champions League final for Chelsea still lives in the minds of Chelsea fans. He led them to their first European Cup triumph. When he retired, he had scored 302 goals in 688 appearances in his club career and 65 with Ivory Coast. he won four Premier League titles and a Champions League.

Meanwhile, Eto'o played for European giants like Barcelona, Inter Milan and Chelsea. The Cameroon legend retired in 2019 with 364 goals in 728 appearances in his club career. he also scored 56 goals for Cameroon. The 42-year-old won back-to-back trebles in 2008/09 and 09/10.

Osimhen vs Eto'o vs Drogba

Osimhen is already a superstar at 24. Drogba was a late bloomer and experienced success later in his career, while Eto'oo rubbed shoulders with greats like Lionel Messi, Thierry Henry, and Ronaldinho.

Here's how the stats of the three strikers compare at 24. These stats are only for their club careers.

Osimhen takes private jet

Sports Brief earlier reported on Osimhen taking a private jet reportedly after the conclusion of the 2023 CAF Awards gala in Marrakesh, Morocco.

After the ceremony, Osimhen had to get back to Italy to prepare for their UEFA Champions League clash against Portuguese side, Braga. They won thanks to an own goal and the Nigerian's first goal since October.

It is possible the Super Eagles ace took the private jet just after the awards ceremony, according to a video posted on Facebook.
