Napoli have reportedly reached an agreement in principle with Victor Osimhen over a new contract as the Super Eagles forward prepares to extend his stay in Italy with the Serie A champions.
The 24-year-old forward scored 26 goals last season, helping the Neapolitans end their 33-year wait for the Scudetto and also becoming the first African to win the league's top scorer's award.
Transfer expert, Fabrizio Romano confirmed via a post on X (formerly Twitter) that Osimhen’s latest contract at Napoli could have a potential release clause of €130 million.
According to the Daily Post, the fresh deal for the recently crowned 2023 African Player of the Year will be valid until June 2026, with the Serie A champions set to make an official announcement soon.
Osimhen, who joined Napoli for a club-record €70m fee from Ligue 1 giants, Lille in 2020, has scored six goals in 11 Serie A games this season and finished eighth in the 2023 Ballon d’Or rankings.
Chelsea suffers blow in Osimhen chase
Meanwhile, the news of a potential new contract for Osimhen will come as a blow to Chelsea, who were interested in making a bid for the Nigerian striker in January or next summer, GOAL reports.
The 24-year-old forward has been on the radar of the struggling English Premier League giants following his impressive performances for Napoli last season, leading them to the Serie A title.
Osimhen’s current deal was set to run out next season, but a new deal for the Super Eagles striker means his value is set to go up, thereby putting off any potential deal for the reigning African Player of the Year.
