FootballBarcelona Players Reportedly Banned From Taking Shower at Club Facilities
- Players from Barcelona are banned from using the shower facilities at their home stadium
- Barcelona players must compensate for surpassing a specified water usage limit
- The defending La Liga champions currently sit fourth in the La Liga table
Barcelona players are currently prohibited from using the shower facilities at their home stadium and training centre for the foreseeable future.
The Catalan giants are hosting their home games this season at the Estadi Olímpic Lluís Companys, which has a capacity of 54,367, as Camp Nou is presently closed for ongoing renovation work.
The stadium, formerly utilised by rivals Espanyol from 1997 to 2009, enables Barcelona to maintain their home matches within Catalonia.
However, Catalonia has been experiencing a prolonged drought that commenced last year.
As reported by Football Espana, the amount of rainfall in Spain from September 2022 has recorded a decline of around 17 percent compared to the 30-year average.
The repercussions have extended to Barcelona's main squad, as Xavi's team has been instructed not to use the showers at their stadium or training facilities in order to conserve water.
The Minister of Climate Action, Food and Rural Agenda, David Mascort, has cautioned Barcelona that if they persist in utilising water at the current rate, they will be required to 'compensate' for that usage, and players are advised to shower at home.
Mascort conveyed to the Spanish radio station Cadena SAR through Mundo Deportivo:
What Barcelona needs to do is offset the water usage through irrigation and economize on showers, whether at Montjuic [home stadium] or Ciutat Esportiva [training facility].
"All these facilities consume significant amounts of water and are obliged to enhance their compensatory measures.
"If Barcelona intends to persist in irrigating the fields, they will be required to offset an even greater proportion of their consumption."
Barcelona forward poised for departure amidst report of tense relationship with Xavi
FootballCatalonia has been enduring a long-running drought since last year, with authorities warning that Barcelona may need to have fresh water shipped in by boat over the coming months.
Presently, Barcelona occupies the fourth position in the La Liga standings, trailing leaders Girona by a margin of seven points.
Xavi sets unwanted record with Girona defeat
Sports Brief in a previous report highlighted Barcelona’s Xavi Hernadez has set an unwanted record for the club following the defeat against Girona.
The defeat against the Catalan club condemned the 43-year-old to a horrible win percentage, which is worse than that of former coach Quique Setien and only bettered by the shambolic tenure of Dutch manager Ronald Koeman.
