Benfica were taking on RB Salzburg in the competition, needing to win by a big margin to secure third place in the group.

They were given a great chance of achieving that when Di Maria scored a goal directly from a corner. Such a feat is commonly referred to as an Olympic goal.

The goal came in the 32nd minute of the game and the Argentine could not contain his excitement after netting it. No stranger to scoring some stunning efforts, this could be one of his finest ever.

The fantastic effort also took him to 23 UEFA Champions League goals, with most of this coming in the colours of Paris Saint-Germain, per Transfermarkt.

Benfica qualify for Europa League

While their first half may have gone well thanks to Di Maria's wonder goal, Benfica had a nervy second-half. Leading 2-0 at the break, they were in pole position to secure third place in the group on goal difference.

All that changed when Salzburg pulled a goal back in the 57th minute to give them third place. The Portuguese side pushed forward constantly in search of a third and finally got it in the 92nd minute.

Arthur Cabral scored with a cheeky backheel goal to give Benfica a 3-1 win and see them through to the Europa League playoffs, Optus Sport reported.

Di Maria receives a hero's welcome

Sports Brief previously reported on Di Maria getting a hero's welcome at Benfica as he returned after 13 years.

The World Cup winner played for the Portuguese giants between 2007 and 2010 before moving to Real Madrid.

Hundreds of fans gathered to welcome the 35-year-old, who spent last season with Italian giants, Juventus.
