Manchester United suffered a humiliating 3-0 defeat at home at the hands of AFC Bournemouth, and manager Andoni Iraola has explained how his team pulled it off.

United took one step forward and two steps backwards with the loss after beating Chelsea 2-1 at Old Trafford with a dominant performance during the week.

Former Chelsea academy star Dominic Solanke opened the scoring with a brilliant backheel finish in the fifth minute. Philip Billing and Marco Senesi added the other goals in the second half.

It was Bournemouth’s first-ever Premier League win at Old Trafford and their fourth win in five games since their 6-1 loss to Manchester City, which put Iraola in the hot seat.

How Bournemouth beat Man Utd

The loss has heaped further pressure on Erik ten Hag, whose position as the head coach of the Red Devils has been sitting on a tightrope due to poor performances and inconsistent results.

Bournemouth coach Iraola, who captained Athletic Bilbao to a 3-2 win at the same stadium in 2013, has explained how he used his team’s strength to hurt United.

“They [United] send a lot of players forward so you will get spaces,” he said via Daily Star.
“We knew they would make our wingers run backwards, but we knew when we could recover high our forwards would have space. We knew in transitions we would have our chances and we took them.”

It was not the first time an opposing manager had exploited United’s spaces at Old Trafford. Bruno Lage, in 2022 with Wolves, identified the same weakness during Ralf Rangnick’s reign.

Next for United is a Champions League tie against Bayern Munich, where a win is necessary to at least have the chance to continue their European adventure.

Fernandes to miss Liverpool clash

Sports Brief reported on Fernandes’ suspension for Liverpool clash at Anfield after picking up a needless yellow card in United’s 3-0 loss to Bournemouth at Old Trafford.

Fernandes, on four yellow cards, was booked for dissent towards the referee after Marcus Rashford was fouled, picking up his fifth booking of the season.
