FootballPercy Tau Favourite for Interclub Player of the Year Ahead of Former Mamelodi Sundowns Teammate
- Percy Tau is the frontrunner for the Interclub Player of the Year at the CAF Awards
- The highlight of Tau's season was winning the CAF Champions League with Al Ahly
- The South African will face Namibian Peter Shalulile and DR Congo's Fiston Mayele
The creme of the African football crop are pressing their evening wear for a celebration of African excellence, with December 11 pencilled in for the 2023 CAF Awards in Marrakesh.
Victor Osimhen, Achraf Hakimi and Mohamed Salah are up the most prestigious prize, with 13 other categories for the male and female nominees, respectively.
Among them is the Interclub Player of the Year, an award given to the best footballer plying their trade with an African club.
Percy Tau is rumoured to be the favourite for the award, edging out Mamelodi Sundowns goal-scorer, Peter Shalulie and Pyramids FC's Fiston Mayele from DR Congo.
Should Tau receive the award, he is expected to do so in absentia as Al Ahly are due in Saudi Arabia for the Club World Cup, as reported by Soccer Laduma.
Thanks to his African Football League exploits, Shalulile will remain hopeful right up until the names are read out. Mayele would be considered a surprise choice, despite strong performances for club and country this year.
The previous winner of the award was Tau's Al Ahly teammate, Mohamed El-Shenawy. Two other notable goalkeeping winners were Denis Onyango in 2016 and Vincent Enyeama in 2004.
Another Al Ahly player holds the record for the most Interclub Player of the Year awards. Mohamed Aboutrika won the accolade in 2006, 2008 and back-to-back in 2012 and 2013, as per CAF.
