Despite the defeat, United remain sixth in the standings with 27 points, three points behind fifth-placed Tottenham Hotspur, who demolished Newcastle United 4-1 at home on Sunday.
Elsewhere, Chelsea's 2-0 shock defeat at Everton saw them drop to 12th with 19 points and are now closer to relegation than they are to the top four.
