2024 Copa America Groups, Teams, and Match Schedule: Argentina, Brazil, Mexico, USA Lead Contenders

The stage is set for the 2024 Copa America.

The groupings have been confirmed for next year’s event, which will take place in the United States from June 20 to July 14.

Sports Brief breaks down the four different groups and the matches to watch in the tournament.

Group A

Teams

Defending champions, Argentina will begin their title defence in Group A. La Albiceleste were drawn against Peru and Chile in the group stage.

Canada and Trinidad and Tobago will lock horns for the last spot in Group A, per Sporting News.

Their group is one of the toughest based on the latest FIFA World Rankings.

Defending World Cup champs Argentina are ranked first, while Peru and Chile are 35th and 40th in the world, respectively.

Canada are ranked 48th in the world, while Trinidad and Tobago are 96th.

Argentina have won the Copa America title 15 times, the latest of which came in 2021 when they beat Brazil in the final.

Chile have won the Copa America twice, capturing back-to-back titles in 2015 and 2016.

Peru also have won the Copa two times, lifting the trophy in 1939 and 1975.

Game to Watch

The match to watch in Group A is the clash between Argentina and Chile. They will face each other on June 25 at MetLife Stadium in a rematch of the 2016 Copa America Final at Meadowlands, which Chile won in a penalty shootout.

Group B

Teams

Mexico were drawn against Ecuador, Venezuela, and Jamaica in Group B.

According to the current FIFA rankings, Mexico are the highest-ranked team in the group (No. 14), followed by Ecuador (No. 32), Venezuela (No. 49), and Jamaica (No. 55).

All four teams have not won a Copa America title in their history.

Game to Watch:

The match to watch in Group B is the showdown between Mexico and Ecuador. They last faced each other in the Copa America in 2015, with Ecuador recording a 2-1 victory.

Group C

Teams

The United States were drawn against Uruguay, Panama, and Bolivia in Group C.

According to the current FIFA rankings, Uruguay are the highest-ranked team in the group (No. 11), followed by the USA (No. 12), Panama (No. 41), and Bolivia (No. 85).

Only Uruguay have won a Copa America title among the four teams in the group, lifting the trophy 15 times.

They hold the record for the most Copa America championships alongside Argentina.

Game to Watch

The match to watch in Group C is the clash between the United States and Uruguay. They last faced each other in the Copa America in 1993, with Uruguay recording a 1-0 victory.

Their last head-to-head matchup transpired in June 2022, with the match finishing in a goalless draw.

Group D

Powerhouse Brazil will begin their 2024 Copa America campaign in Group D. Selecao were drawn against Colombia and Paraguay in the group stage.

Honduras and Costa Rica will square off for the last spot in Group D.

According to the current FIFA rankings, Brazil are the highest-ranked team in the group (No. 5), followed by Colombia (No. 15), and Paraguay (No. 53).

Costa Rica are ranked 52nd in the world, while Honduras are 76th.

Brazil have won the Copa America title nine times, the latest of which came in 2019 when they beat Peru in the final.

Paraguay have won the Copa America twice, lifting the trophy in 1953 and 1979.

Colombia’s lone Copa America title came in 2001.

Game to Watch

The match to watch in Group D is the showdown between Brazil and Colombia on July 2. They last faced each other in the Copa America in 2021, with Brazil recording a come-from-behind 2-1 victory.

Casemiro handed Selecao the victory, scoring the match-winner deep into second-half stoppage time.

Messi in Copa America

They will open their campaign on June 20 against the winner of Canada vs. Trinidad and Tobago.
