  • Gianluigi Donnarumma is the latest goalkeeper to be sent off in a game
  • The Paris Saint-Germain goalkeeper was sent off for a high foot challenge
  • Donnarumma joins the likes of Lehman and Khan to be sent off in a game

It is an extremely rare sight to see the goalkeeper receiving a red card in a match, but some goalies have found a way to get sent off in games for various reasons, with Gianluigi Donnarumma being the latest casualty.

Goalkeepers are usually called the “last line of defence” as their job is to make sure they prevent their opponents from scoring, and in doing so, some have paid the ultimate prize.

According to Caught Offisde, PSG’s Donnarumma received a red card on Sunday afternoon after a high foot challenge on an opposition player as the Ligue 1 champions won 2-0 away at La Havre.

The Italian goalkeeper rushed out of his box to clear the ball but completely misjudged it and led with a high-foot challenge that almost caught the opposition player in the head.

Here, Sports Brief alongside Feed Me Goal takes a look at the list of goalkeepers who have received the most rec cards in their career following the sending off of PSG goalkeeper Donnarumma.

Top 6 red-carded goalkeepers

1. Jens Lehmann (7 red cards)

2. Diego Lopez (5 red cards)

3. Daniel Aranzubia (5 red cards)

4. Oliver Kahn (4 red cards)

5. Pepe Reina (4 red cards)

6. Jussi Jaaskelainen (4 red cards)

Italian journalist defends Donnarumma

Meanwhile, Gigio Donnarumma has been in the spotlight recently owing to his errors with PSG, but Italian journalist Fabio Caressa supports the former Milan goalie, claiming he is being destroyed and it is unfair, Football Italia reports.

The Italian goalkeeper was blamed for goals conceded against Monaco and Newcastle last week, and he was sent off in a Ligue 1 encounter against Le Havre on Sunday, casting doubt on his starting spot at PSG.

However, PSG manager Luis Enrique has defended Donnarumma, saying that the goalkeeper had followed his instructions, so he was the one to blame for his red card.

Donnarumma shown straight red card

Earlier, Sports Brief reported Gianluigi Donnarumma was the villain of the night during Paris Saint-Germain’s Ligue 1 clash against Le Havre after getting sent off in the first ten minutes of the encounter.

The goalkeeper was shown a straight red card for a reckless tackle on Le Havre forward Josue Casimir after catching Le Havre forward Josue Casimir with a high boot to the face.

Donnarumma was caught hesitating on the edge of his box before coming hurtling out. He attempted to clear the ball on the edge of his goal but was beaten by Casimir.
