  • Barcelona have continued to grapple with injuries
  • The La Liga club recently lost Gavi to an ACL tear
  • Another pivotal player is set to undergo surgery

Barcelona are grappling with yet another injury setback, just as the team was recovering from its early-season string of injury troubles.

The recent international break has left the Catalan club in dismay, with key midfielder Pablo Gavi being sidelined due to an Anterior Cruciate Ligament (ACL) injury and goalkeeper Marc Andre ter Stegen ruled out due to back discomfort.

While Gavi has received a diagnosis that rules him out for the foreseeable future, Ter Stegen's lower back injury remains undiagnosed.

Despite initial hopes that he would be back in time for the midweek UEFA Champions League fixture against Porto, the German international was not deemed fit for inclusion in the team.

As reported by Barca Universal, the club initially pursued conservative treatment for Ter Stegen, but it seems ineffective, leading to a sense of urgency and prompting the consideration of a more drastic measure.

Barcelona’s measure to recover Ter Stegen

As quoted by Barca Buzz, reports from Catalunya-based journalist Marta Ramon Gorina suggest that Barcelona is contemplating back surgery for the former Borussia Monchengladbach man if his condition does not improve in the coming days.

The club's swift action underscores the importance of Ter Stegen, whose outstanding performances in goal played a significant role in securing last season's La Liga crown under Xavi Hernandez.

In Ter Stegen's absence, 24-year-old reserve goalkeeper Inaki Pena has stepped in admirably since his debut against Rayo Vallecano. Pena's solid performance earned praise in a La Liga fixture against league rivals Atletico Madrid, helping alleviate some of the pressure caused by the absence of the experienced goalkeeper.

Ter Stegen’s latest Barcelona contract

In a previous report, Sports Brief discussed the latest contract offering of goalkeeper Ter Stegen.

Ter Stegen, who has witnessed a resurgence in form following his recovery from a thigh injury that kept him out for most of the 2020/21 season, recently penned a new contract at the Catalan club.

With Barcelona keen on the reduction of their wage structure as they struggle to balance the books with Financial Fair Play rules, the German was also given a reduced weekly wage, which is now said to be just over ₤120,000, which translates to ₤6.3 million annually.
