According to Sky Sports, United splashed out £34.6m - plus another £4.4m in add-ons to land the Dutchman on a five-year deal.

However, the Netherlands international has failed to live up to his billing since his arrival, with his struggles at Old Trafford initially seeing him loaned to Everton.

The arrival of Ten Hag in April 2022 to take charge at United was initially expected to help revive Van de Beek's career, having shone under the tactician during their time together at Ajax.

However, this has not been the case, with the midfielder currently struggling for game time under ten Hag.

Ten Hag speaks on Van de Beek's future

Ten Hag has now hinted there is every chance the former Ajax midfielder could leave United during the January transfer window.

Asked about the 26-year-old's future at Old Trafford during a recent press conference, Ten Hag said:

"I can see he has to play for his career and for everything."

According to Sportbible, Van de Beek was a subject of transfer speculation during the summer, with Lorient and Real Sociedad among the clubs he was linked with.

Ten Hag praises Maguire

Earlier, Sports Brief reported on ten Hag has showing Harry Maguire with rare praises amid the centre-back's continued resurgence.

Maguire has enjoyed a fine run of form in recent weeks that has seen him force his way back into ten Hag's starting XI.

The England international looked set to depart Old Trafford in the summer after he fell down the pecking order under the Dutchman, who initially appeared to prefer the partnership of Lisandro Martinez and Raphael Varane.
