La Liga giant Barcelona continues to grapple with severe financial challenges, navigating through them in ways that seem almost unimaginable.

Among the array of star players, Barcelona is keen on extending the contract of midfielder Frenkie De Jong. According to reports from Spanish outlet Sport, the club's sporting director, Anderson Luís de Souza, largely referred to as Deco, has expressed his intention to extend the Dutch international's contract. However, Barcelona faces an underlying issue in this endeavour.

Barcelona's challenges regarding de Jong's contract

The outlet reports Deco aims to finalise the extension of the 26-year-old's contract before the winter transfer window. However, it seems this might prove challenging given the financial hurdle the club would have to scale regarding the former Ajax man's salary.

Data from Ai Score indicates that the midfielder is set to earn a salary exceeding €32 million for the 2023-24 season. Barcelona is hopeful that De Jong will consider reduced pay to alleviate their current precarious financial situation.

Despite the amicable relationship between both parties, even after the club attempted to sell the midfielder a few months ago, an agreement is expected to be reached eventually.

However, the report underscores that if a consensus on salary terms is not reached, given Barcelona's preference for the Willem II Academy graduate to defer a significant portion of his salary, a potential sale of the midfielder could once again become a viable option.

As of now, De Jong's existing contract with La Blaugrana is set to run until the conclusion of the 2024-25 season.
