  • Thabang Monare received his marching orders for an off-the-field incident with a ballboy
  • Video footage of the supposed altercation shows the Orlando Pirates player did little wrong
  • Monare watched the last few minutes of the Buccaneers' match from the dressing room

Video evidence has emerged from Orlando Pirates' encounter with Richards Bay FC

The match was televised but no replays were shown of Thabang Monare's incident with a ballboy, which earned the midfielder the scorn of the referee.

Although the video is from some distance away, it gives a good enough indication that perhaps the referee was too quick to pull out the red card.

Monare and his fellow Pirates substitutes were gathered near the corner flag toward the end of the 90 minutes when the incident occurred.

The broadcasters showed a ballboy clutching his face before the referee sent an angry Monare to the dressing room.

The full video shows the ballboy, with Pirates in a hurry after just winning a corner, sauntering over to the midfielder, who removes the ball from his hands.

Richards Bay had been actively wasting time, with Siyanda Dlamini and Jackson Mabokgwane receiving yellow cards for their constant delaying tactics.

Sports Brief relayed Pirates' Jose Riveiro's comments about his opponents' tactics following his team's inability to find a winning goal.

Neither the league's administrators nor the club have yet commented on the incident, but fans have called for the card to be rescinded, or at the very least, downgraded, as reported by SoccerLaduma.

The Buccaneers will hope for a speedy resolution as Pirates have a week before the visit of their original Soweto Derby rivals, Moroka Swallows, and will need all the firepower they can get to break down the second-tightest defence in the league.

DStv Premiership Team of the Week

Sports Brief recently compiled a DStv Premiership Team of the Week for the November 26 weekend.

Kaizer Chiefs and Cape Town City had several impressive performers as did Royal AM and TS Galaxy.

Sage Stephens was the star in between the sticks with a crucial penalty save that secured three points.
