However, they were unable to build on this result when they visited the Magpies, as they fell to a humiliating defeat.

According to Sky Sports, Alexander Isak opened the scoring for Newcastle inside 13 minutes of action before Raheem Sterling restored parity with a stunning free-kick 10 minutes later.

Jamaal Lascelles, Joelinton, and Anthony Gordon went on to find the back of the net in the second half to condemn the visitors to a comprehensive defeat.

Silva makes history

ESPN reports that Silva made history during the Newcastle tie as he became the club's oldest-ever outfield player at 39 years and 64 days old.

The Brazilian joined Chelsea in the summer of 2020 as a free agent following his departure from Paris Saint-Germain.

He has gone on to form an important part of the squad since his arrival, with the greatest highlight of his Stamford Bridge career coming in 2021 when they won the Champions League.

Silva apologises to fans

Earlier, Sports Brief reported Thiago Silva has penned a heartfelt apology to his Chelsea teammates and fans following their humbling defeat to Newcastle United on Saturday afternoon.

Eddie Howe's charges put four goals past a hapless Chelsea in a slick second-half performance after what was an evenly-contested first period.

Alexander Isak scored on his return after 13 minutes before Raheem Sterling equalised with a breathtaking freekick 10 minutes later.
