FootballNewcastle United vs Chelsea: Thiago Silva Apologises After Horror Show in Crushing Defeat
- Thiago Silva has apologised to his Chelsea teammates after his costly error vs Newcastle
- The veteran Brazilian defender cheaply gave the ball away to gift Joelinton his side's 3rd goal
- Chelsea were convincingly beaten at the St.James Park by an under-strength Eddie Howe side
Thiago Silva has penned a heartfelt apology to his Chelsea teammates and fans following their humbling defeat to Newcastle United on Saturday afternoon.
Eddie Howe's charges put four goals past a hapless Chelsea in a slick second-half performance after what was an evenly-contested first period.
Alexander Isak scored on his return after 13 minutes before Raheem Sterling equalised with a breathtaking freekick 10 minutes later.
Chelsea, however, fell apart after the break after two quick goals from the Mgapies turned the game on its head. It started with captain Jamal Lascelles heading in Anthony Gordon's cross before an uncharacteristic Thiago Silva error gifted Joelinton a third goal.
The Blues, who had their coach Mauricio Pochettino watching from the stands, then had their captain Reece James sent off for a second bookable offence before Gordon wrapped up the demolition.
Thiago Silva's message to Chelsea fans
Taking to his social media pages, Silva accepted blame for his role in the defeat, promising to do better.
"I'm devastated. It wasn't a good day for us. I would like to apologize to everyone for the defeat, especially to my teammates who believe in me and support me every day. I take full responsibility. Let's gather strength and come back stronger."
Silva had earlier made history by becoming the oldest outfield player to ever play for the club. The veteran centre-back will have a chance to make amends alongside his teammates when they play Brighton and Hive Albion next week.
Mauricio Pochettino slams Chelsea
Sports Brief has also reported that Mauricio Pochettino labelled Chelsea’s defeat to Newcastle United their ‘worst game of the season’ as the Blues were dealt another brutal reality check.
After receiving bookings against Brighton, Burnley and Manchester City, Pochettino could only watch from the stands as his team was completely obliterated by a resurgent Newcastle.
