  • Chelsea were hammered 4-1 by Newcastle United on Saturday, November 25
  • The result saw Mauricio Pochettino’s side slip to the bottom half of the table
  • The Chelsea boss dubbed the defeat the ‘worst game of the season’

Mauricio Pochettino labelled Chelsea’s defeat to Newcastle United their ‘worst game of the season’ as the Blues were dealt another brutal reality check.

After receiving bookings against Brighton, Burnley and Manchester City, Pochettino could only watch from the stands as his team was completely obliterated by a resurgent Newcastle.

Talisman Alexander Isak opened the scoring in the 13th minute, but Chelsea were back in the game 10 minutes later as the in-form Raheem Sterling scored a delightful free kick which ended up being the only goal his side scored on Saturday afternoon.

Jamaal Lascelles and Joelinton put the game beyond the visitors in the second half, before things went from bad to worse for Mauricio Pochettino’s side as Reece James was shown a second yellow card for a foul on Antthony Gordon, who rounded off a perfect night for his team with a goal late on.

Pochettino’s take

Pochettino had nowhere to hide after the game after the comprehensive defeat, and admitted to Premier League productions that his side were second best.

“It was our worst game of the season. It was tough to be in the stands,” he said as quoted by EuroSport.
“We cannot complain about the result, we did not read the game from the beginning. “
He added: “We did not play how we should play, we showed a lack of intensity and energy. Even after we scored, at 1-1, it was a chance for us to force them to play deep, but it was so easy for Newcastle. That is why I am so upset with the performance.”

Defeat against the Magpies left Chelsea in danger of slipping to the bottom half of the table and lower, depending on other results of the weekend.

Their next game is another tricky fixture, this time against Brighton and Hove Alvion on Sunday, December 3.
