He entered the match as a substitute, with the Santos star replacing his club teammate Del Vecchio in the second half at the Maracana, per FIFA.com.
Pele made an immediate impact, netting in the 76th minute to become Brazil’s youngest-ever scorer, a record that he still holds up to this day.
Argentina replied the next minute to deny Pele a winning start to his international career with Brazil.
Pele scored 77 goals in 92 international matches for Brazil.
Ronaldo replaces Bebeto on his debut
Ronaldo made his debut for Brazil at the age of 17 years, six months, and five days.
Like Pele, he played his first game for the Selecao against arch-rivals Argentina, with that match taking place in March 1994.
He entered the game as a substitute in the 80th minute, replacing Bebeto, who scored twice in that contest.
Fans in Recife cheered as the teen phenom made his first appearance for Brazil.
