This has been the case at Manchester United, which has seen several notable departures since the arrival of Erik ten Hag.

Sports Brief now looks at the 20 players who left the club after the arrival of the Dutchman in the summer of 2022.

1. Dean Henderson - Crystal Palace

Henderson joined Crystal Palace as a second-choice goalkeeper in the summer but has struggled with a stubborn thigh injury.

2. Eric Bailly

Bailly permanently left Manchester United in the summer after a loan spell in France, he now plays for Turkish side Besiktas but is also struggling with injuries.

3. Teden Mengi, Luton Town

Teden Mengi has been an integral part of the Hatters since joining the club from Manchester United. He featured against his former side last weekend in Luton Town’s 1-0 defeat.

4. Alex Telles, Al Nassr

Telles left United for the Middle East this summer and has since linked up with another former Manchester United star Cristiano Ronaldo. He is a crucial member of the first team at Al Nassr.

5. Zidane Iqbal, FC Utrecht

Zidane Iqbal left Manchester United to join Erik ten Hag’s former side Utrecht. His spell with the Dutch club has, however, been hampered by injuries.

6. David de Gea, Free agent

Since leaving United when his contract expired, David de Gea has been without a club, although he has been linked with a return to Manchester United.

Latest reports by The Mirror have however tipped the Spaniard to join second-tier Spanish side Eldense.

7. Axel Tuanzebe, Ipswich Town

He left United as a free agent when his contract expired and has since joined Ipswich Town. Ipswich are among the clubs fighting for promotion to the Championship.

8. Cristiano Ronaldo, Al Nassr

The five-time Ballon d’Or winner had a sensational fallout with Ten Hag and has since ended his stint in Europe by joining Al Nassr.

9. James Garner, Everton

James Garner’s exit from Manchester United in 2022 surprised many, but his patience paid off as Everton took up his services last year.

He is currently a regular in Sean Dyche’s team.

10. Juan Mata, Vissel Kobe

Mata was one of the first departures of the Ten Hag era. The midfield maestro spent a season with Galatasaray and now plays for Japanese side Vissel Kobe.

11. Nemanja Matic, Rennes

Matic linked up with Jose Mourinho for a third stint when he joined Roma in 2022 but has since moved on with Stade Rennais in the French top flight.

12. Jesse Lingard, free agent

Lingard left United when his contract expired and has been linked with several football clubs.

After a botched move to West Ham, the attacking midfielder is still without a club but has been linked with a move to the Middle East.

13. Paul Pogba, Juventus

The 2018 World Cup winner returned to Juventus last year, but injuries have plagued his spell. He is also facing a lengthy ban after anti-doping failure, according to France24.

14. Andreas Pereira, Fulham

He permanently left Manchester United after Ten Hag’s arrival and is now a regular starter at Fulham under Marco Silva.

15. Edinson Cavani, Boca Juniors

The veteran Uruguay striker joined Valencia on a free transfer when he left Manchester United and currently plays for Boca Juniors in South America.

16. Matej Kovar, Bayer Leverkusen

Kovar is a young goalkeeper still finding his footing in Xabi Alonso’s team, Bayer Leverkusen.

He is yet to feature in the Bundesliga but has started all his new team’s games in the Europa League.
