  • Gabriel Jesus joined the Brazil squad for the upcoming internationals
  • This is despite Mikel Arteta stating the striker should not be picked due to injury
  • Jesus has been struggling with a hamstring injury sustained in October

Arsenal striker Gabriel Jesus has reported for international duty, despite his club manager Mikel Arteta insisting he needs to be sidelined to recover from injury.

Jesus has been missing in action for Arsenal after sustaining a hamstring problem in the Gunners’ UEFA Champions League game against Sevilla on October 24.

He has been left out of Arsenal’s match-day squad since Mikel Arteta suggested, he needed more time to fully recover.

"I don’t know. I’m going to talk to the doctors and him because he didn’t do any training with us. He’s far from working with the team, but it’s an internal communication between the club and the national team. The first intention is always to seek the best for the player." Arteta said as quoted by ESPN.

But despite the Arsenal boss’ concerns, Jesus appears to have defied him as The Mirror reports that the forward is in Brazil's squad for the nation’s upcoming games.

During the international break, Brazil has crunch World Cup qualifier matches against Colombia and Argentina.

Jesus, 26, will face further assessment during the international break from the Brazil medical team, and a decision will be made on whether he can play. England had a similar situation recently with Bukayo Saka last month.

What Brazil's manager said

As per FIFA rules, it is entirely within Brazil’s right to call up their forward and assess him for themselves.

This will, however, likely lead to tensions between Brazil and Arsenal.

Last Monday, Brazil coach Fernando Diniz appeared to hint Arsenal were ‘lying’ about Gabriel Jesus’ condition, suggesting he would call up the forward.

“In the last call-up, we hadn’t called up [Gabriel] Martinelli, from Arsenal,” he said as cited on Standard.co.uk.
"We are going to bring Gabriel [Jesus] to find out the real conditions, because we still have 15 days until the games, so we believe that he can be able to play, because I like him a lot.

Diniz’s Martinelli reference alluded to a case that saw Brazil leave out the Arsenal winger during the last international break due to injury concerns.

Days later, Martinelli played in the Manchester City match against Arsenal, scoring the winner against Pep Guardiola’s side.

Arteta provides update on Jesus' injury

Sports Brief reported earlier about the Arsenal manager's update on Gabriel Jesus' injury update. Speaking after a game the Spanish gaffer suggested that Jesus felt something in his hamstring and immediately asked to be subbed off.

Arteta further went on to suggest that they would have to wait and see in the subsequent days. Whilst the Brazilian suggested that there's no need for panic:

"I felt something. Let’s see. I did some tests with the physio, it looks not that big, but let’s see. I have a scan, maybe tomorrow. I’m pretty sure it will be nothing," he said.
