Bayer Leverkusen are the toast of the Bundesliga this season as Xabi Alonso’s team are yet to taste defeat from their opening 11 games of the season.
After earning 31 points out of a possible 33 from their opening games this season, Leverkusen are in top spot in the league, putting them two points above reigning champions and second-placed Bayern Munich.
The feat has also seen Leverkusen match an eight-year record set by Pep Guardiola in the Bundesliga when he was previously in charge of Bayern Munich in the 2015/16 campaign, Planet Football reports.
Leverkusen reclaimed first place in the Bundesliga with a 4-0 thrashing of Union Berlin, with goals from Alex Grimaldo, Odilon Kossounou, Jonathan Tah, and Nathan Tella.
Alonso will be hoping to end Bayern Munich’s dominance of the Bundesliga by leading his Leverkusen team to the German league title this year, ending the Bavarians' 11-year reign as champions.
Alonso delighted with Leverkusen's form
Meanwhile, Bayer Leverkusen manager Xabi Alonso says he is satisfied with what his team has achieved this season as they returned to the top of the Bundesliga table after a 4-0 thrashing of Union Berlin, per Channels.
Bayern Munich is the only team Alonso’s team is yet to defeat this season in the league, as both teams played out an entertaining 2-2 draw in their first meeting in September.
Leverkusen will be looking to end their long wait of winning the Bundesliga this season after finishing as runners-up five times in the past without winning the competition.
