According to Sky Sports, the former striker went on to recruit ex-teammates Ashley Cole and John O'Shea as part of his backroom staff.

The former England international was recruited by Birmingham to replace John Eustace, who had been sacked at the time despite the club sitting sixth in the Championship after back-to-back wins.

However, Rooney has endured a disastrous start at the helm of affairs at St. Andrew's, with his side yet to register a win since his arrival, per has.

Rooney's reign as Birmingham boss

Rooney has been in charge of Birmingham for five matches so far, with his first coming against Middlesbrough, who he lost 1-0 against.

He has since played against Hull City, Southampton, and Ipswich Town.

His side's most recent outing was against Sunderland, who humbled them 3-1 at the Stadium of Light on Saturday.

The defeat saw Birmingham City drop to 18th in the Championship standings with just 19 points from 16 games.

Rooney's poor start with the Blues has earned him ridicule from a section of fans, with some suggesting he is ruining his football legacy.

@Keneknowsball added:

"Rooney was a great player but awful manager ,why does he keep coming back,he’s trying to ruin his legacy."

"No surprises here, he's the perfect candidate for Man United."

Rooney slammed over post-match comments

Earlier, Sports Brief reported Wayne Rooney has been accused of “watching a different game” by Birmingham fans following his comments on the team in the wake of their latest defeat.

Since the controversial departure of John Eustace, Birmingham have been on a downward slip, and it has mostly been blamed on 38-year-old Rooney.
